Bio
Richard is a 2006 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. In 2022, Richard graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) with his Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP). The focus of his scholarly project was improving first time National Certification Exam pass rates for CRNA programs.
He has always had a passion for training future nurse anesthetists and has been involved in the education of them since 2006. He began by coordinating the clinical training of students at his facility for two different nurse anesthesia training programs in South Carolina. After holding that position for several years, the University of South Carolina expanded its affiliation with Prisma Health - Upstate and Richard became an Assistant Program Director for the University of South Carolina’s Nurse Anesthesia Program. In his role as the Assistant Program Director he opened a second campus for the program and oversaw the didactic and clinical training of students on the satellite campus while working alongside academic colleagues at the main campus.
Recently Richard joined the faculty at Ursuline College with Somnia Nurse Anesthesia Program (SNAP) as their Assistant Program Director - East Coast. In his role, he oversees clinical training hubs on the east coast, serves as the program faculty liaison for scholarly projects, directs and lectures in nurse anesthesia courses, serves as faculty liaison to the marketing team, focuses on enhancing their distant education technology and designs curriculum for SEE and NCE preparation.
Richard has served on and co-chaired several committees within the South Carolina Association of Nurse Anesthetists including the Education/Program Committee and PR Committee. During his time with the Association, he planned the State Association Meeting and moderated their social media sites. He has also served as an item writer for the Self-Evaluation Exam which is administered by the National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists to student registered nurse anesthetists. Recently he was elected to serve on the AANA Leadership Identification Committee and selected to serve as an AANA Social Media Ambassador.
Richard has participated as a contributor by reviewing content for multiple anesthesia reference books along with writing a chapter on Blood Component Therapy in the 7th edition of Nurse Anesthesia which is the primary textbook used by many Programs. He has presented at numerous state nurse anesthesia association and private CE company meetings and published articles in the AANA Journal and Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing (JOPAN). He moderates a social media forum for nurse anesthesia program faculty across the country and serves as expert consultant in CRNA School Prep Academy, a mentorship program for RNs seeking to attend CRNA school.
